Presentation of the Institute of the Americas (IDA-Rennes)

version version version version

History

The Institute of the Americas in Rennes (IDA-Rennes) was created in 2003 by professors and research fellows specializing in the Americas, North and South, at various institutions of higher learning in Rennes, France. This group of academics assembled itself from the foreign language, social science, and literature departments at the University of Rennes I, Rennes II, the Institut d’Études Politiques (the Institute of Political Sciences), and Agrocampus.

The IDA-Rennes is the Rennes branch of the national IDA created by the Institut des Hautes Études en Amérique Latine (IHEAL) located at the University of Paris III.

Mission

The purpose of the IDA-Rennes is to federate research projects, Masters and Doctoral courses, or any cooperative activities dealing with “spaces, societies, and cultures in the Americas.” The scope of this project extends from Rennes, Brittany, and France (within the national project of the IDA), to the rest of the world. The innovative nature of the IDA-Rennes lies in its multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional approach together with a thematic perspective emphasizing the links that unite or, conversely, the conflicts that divide the Americas.

Description

The American continent is usually separated into two large cultural areas, North America and Latin America, which are themselves compartmentalized into multiple national and regional entities, often considered separately: the USA, Quebec, the Carribean, Brazil, etc. However, beyond these clichés and apparently diverging perspectives, the Americas offer new interest when considered from a multi-disciplinary angle. The concept of “Americanness” emerges. What are the bridges and what are the barriers that unite and/or separate each of these worlds? One considers environmental issues, inter-American relationships and their challenges, the relationship of the United States to the rest of the world, economic and social impacts of globalization and the process of continental integration, similarities and disparities in cultural, ethnic, and linguistic policies, mobility and demographic, economic, and cultural fluxes between the American nations, the effects of hybridization, and mutual influences in literature and the arts; or the very nature and the evolution of French and American relations.

Groupement d'Intérêt Scientifique (GIS)

The IDA-Rennes, structured as a GIS (Groupement d’Intérêt Scientifique) will soon integrate the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme de Bretagne. Beyond the teaching and research activities of different members of the GIS Amériques, the IDA-Rennes also organizes multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional activities each year: Master: “Les Amériques,” the Chair of the “Americas” program, research seminars, etc. By organizing public lectures and documentary cycles on the American continent, IDA-Rennes ensures the promotion of its members’ publications to the general public.
