The “Chair of the Americas,” a professorial position established at the beginning of the 2004-2005 academic year at the University of Rennes 2, exists within the framework of the Americas Institute of Rennes.
For a length of one-to-three months, the Chair position welcomes university professors or certified researchers from the Americas who specialize in one of the disciplinary fields or laboratories encompassed by the Americas Institute in Rennes: anthropology, geography, sociology, literature, political economics, political science, civilization, law, etc.
The purpose of the Chair position is to strengthen and stimulate institutional partnerships and promote professorial exchanges among institutions of higher education in Rennes and the Americas, thus furthering the mobility of researchers and the spread of knowledge. With this in mind, the Chair of the Americas seeks, above all, candidates who work within American institutions of higher education or research and who already have ties with a specific department at the University of Rennes 2.
Professors and researches selected for the Chair position will enjoy the status of University of Rennes 2 Guest Conference Director and will receive corresponding remuneration. If they wish, they may be housed in a fully equiped flat (1 person)). loging and travel expenses will be paid for Americas Institute of Rennes, at a given fixed rate.
A Chair holder’s one-to-three-month stay must fall within the limits of the university calendar: mid-September to mid-december 2008 for the first semester and mid-January to mid-April 2009 for the second semester for this upcoming year. Professors and researchers selected for the position will teach courses, lead conferences, or conduct seminars and/or direct research activities in collaboration with one or more Rennes university departments encompassed by the Americas Institute of Rennes. Interaction with the Rennes Masters programs is desirable, in particular with the Masters: The Americas program. Chair holders may also work directly, in one degree or another, with the National Institute of the Americas.
Candidates may, in accordance with the Chair Secretary or with their local institutions concerned, define the specifics of their work within the Chair program. Based on the nature of this work, particularly presentations or collaborative activities with students from the Master I: The Americas program – hispanists and North-Americanists – adequate mastery of French may be essential.
